Scleral Lenses

What are scleral lenses?

Scleral lenses are large gas permeable contact lenses that are custom designed and computer lathed for each individual patient.  These medical devices require proper evaluation and are prescribed by a licensed and skilled eye care practitioner. Scleral lenses vault over the entire corneal surface and rest on the white part of the eye, which is called the sclera. A chamber of sterile saline is held between the front of the eye and the contact lens allowing for maximum comfort and exceptional vision, even for patients with irregular corneas. This layer of tears helps to minimize ghosting, distortions, glare, and halos to provide patients with the best vision they have had in years while experiencing a comfortable wearing experience.

Who are scleral lenses recommended for?

Anyone can wear scleral lenses, however, they are particularly great for patients who have eye conditions in which they cannot see clearly with traditional glasses or contact lenses due to irregular corneas or dry eyes. This includes patients with keratoconus, post-LASIK ectasia, post-RK ectasia, corneal transplants, severe dry eye, high astigmatism or prescriptions, graft vs host disease, and/or corneal scarring.
